And globally, there is a floating mass of trash in the Pacific Ocean twice the size of Texas. It is estimated to have at least 12 times as much trash as plankton per square measurement of mass. Scientists estimate that approximately 80% of this debris comes from land based sources like the coast of California. Our hopes are to increase awareness in our community about the destructive impact we have on our environment to make the world a healthier and cleaner place to live. Background: Each year the City holds a spring and fall Beautification Days to remove litter in parks, neighborhoods and shoreline ares and to assist residents with cleaning up and beautifying their neighborhoods. Garbage, litter and overgrown greenery are removed from common grounds such as parks, open spaces, medians and sidewalks with the City and Marin Sanitary Service providing dumpsters, garbage bags and pick up of debris. Call or email the Volunteer Program if you'd like to organize your own cleanup day. The Volunteer Program provides latex gloves, large bags, and refreshements to everyone who participates. Then they don some gloves, grab some bags and go for it! This is a great opportunity to bring out the kids and introduce them to tangible efforts at bettering the community one sidewalk at a time. For many, these Beautification Days have become a traditional family event. For more information on either of these Beautification Days weekends, call the Volunteer Program at 415-485-3407 |
